Artistic expression continues to evolve over the years, however some misconceptions about photography continue to exist. These misunderstandings can influence how people perceive photographers and the value of professional work. I have been in multiple situations where I am asked what I do for a living and when I respond that I am a photographer, some of the looks are as if I just said a dirty word. It’s crazy how some perceive the art of photography. Let’s explore and debunk some of the most common misconceptions.
1. “Anyone Can Take a Great Photo with a Good Camera”
One of the most pervasive myths is that having a high-quality camera automatically results in great photos. While modern cameras have advanced features that make taking good pictures easier, photography is much more than just owning a good camera.
Skill and Experience
Professional photographers have years of experience and training, even self taught photographers. They understand the principles of composition, lighting, and timing, which are critical in creating outstanding images. The ability to see and capture a moment artistically is a skill honed over time, not a function of the camera alone.
Technical Knowledge
Good photography involves mastering the technical aspects of the camera, such as aperture, shutter speed, ISO, and white balance. Professional photographers know how to adjust these settings to suit different conditions and achieve the desired effect, something an automatic setting on a camera can’t always do.
I have handed my camera to my fiancé who is someone that felt he “was kinda like a professional photographer” and given him the opportunity to show me his skills. While he may have a vision of what he wanted the image to be. they come out out of focus and over/under exposed. Theres no doubt in my mind that he could be an amazing photographer with experience and training because he sees the beauty all around him but it will be because of the work he puts into it, not the camera in his hands.
2. “Photography Is Just a Click of a Button”
This misconception about photography significantly underestimates the effort and skill involved in photography.
Planning and Preparation
A lot of work goes into planning a shoot. Photographers need to consider the location, time of day, weather, equipment, and even the mood they want to capture. Each of these factors requires careful planning and preparation. In addition to the technical aspects, being a portrait photographer requires the ability to make your client feel at ease an natural in front of the camera.
Post-Processing
Taking the photo is only half the job. Post-processing is a critical part of photography that involves editing and enhancing the images using software like Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom. This process can take hours and requires a good eye and technical skills to perfect the final image.
3. “Professional Photography Is Too Expensive”
Many people believe that hiring a professional photographer is an unnecessary expense, especially in an era where everyone has a smartphone camera. While professional photography is a luxury item, the cost is justified by the quality and expertise provided. Many photographers, myself included, offer payment plans to make it easier to afford.
Quality and Expertise
Professional photographers invest thousands in high-end equipment, continuous learning, and have a deep understanding of their craft. The equipment and education is not the only cost of doing business. Professional photographers have business insurance, many different softwares to book clients, deliver galleries, etc, website expenses, legal and accounting services, taxes and licenses, the list goes on.
Value of Memories
When it comes to significant life events such as weddings, graduations, or family portraits, professional photography ensures that these precious moments are captured beautifully and preserved for a lifetime. The value of these memories far outweighs the cost. We’ve all heard the question, if your house was on fire what would you grab before you ran out? Most of the time it is photographs that they can’t replace.
4. “Editing Is Cheating”
There is a common belief that editing a photo is equivalent to cheating. However, editing is an essential part of the photographic process.
Enhancing Reality
Editing helps to enhance the image, making it closer to what the photographer envisioned when they took the shot. This can involve correcting exposure, adjusting colors, cropping for better composition, or removing distractions.
Artistic Expression
Photography is an art form, and like any other art, it allows for creative expression. Editing is a tool that photographers use to express their artistic vision and bring their creativity to life.
5. “All Photographers Do the Same Thing”
Another misconception is that all photographers are the same and offer identical services. In reality, photography is a diverse field with various specializations.
Different Specializations
Photographers often specialize in different areas such as portrait, landscape, wedding, fashion, wildlife, and commercial photography. Each specialization requires unique skills, equipment, and approaches.
Personal Style
Every photographer has a unique style and perspective that they bring to their work. This personal touch is what makes each photographer’s work distinct and special. I have been to many styled shoots with other photographers and although we are taking capturing the same moment, our end results are completely different. This is why it is so important to find a photographers work that matches what you want your final images to resemble and not just hire the cheapest one you come across.
Do I feel like professional photography is a requirement? No, obviously we can live our lives without ever hiring a photographer but there is value in having professional images taken. Whether it is professionalism in your industry with your branding, being able to see ourselves through the eyes of someone else, increasing our self-confidence with boudoir or the ability to ‘be in the moment’ while someone else is capturing beautiful memories of our life events. I hope by debunking some of the common misconceptions, we can better appreciate the true value and craftsmanship that professional photographers bring to their work. So next time you admire a stunning photograph, remember the expertise and effort behind the lens.
